Breast Lift

Weight loss, ageing, diminished skin quality and other factors can lead to considerable sag, or droop, of the breasts. Breast lifting is offered at our Bundaberg facilities to improve shape, weight and contours of the breasts into a more desirable position.

Breast Lift

Droopiness of the breasts is a common issue that affects millions of women. Due to a variety of factors, women often experience breast sag that affects the types of clothes they can wear and the body aesthetic in general, not to mention their self-esteem. Some of the causes of breast droop include:

  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Nursing
  • Genetics
  • Weight loss

Breast Lift Procedure

The breast lift procedure, medically known as mastopexy, is a relatively straightforward procedure with minimal recovery time. Our plastic surgeon will make an incision from the areola (the dark-pigmented area around the nipple) down to the crease of the breast. After removing excess skin, Dr. James Gaffield will tighten the remaining skin and reshape the breasts. The nipples will be moved to a higher position along with the breasts. The result is a much tighter and firmer look and feel to the breasts, giving them a more “perky” appearance. The breast lift procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about three hours to complete.

Breast Lift Recovery

You should expect some degree of swelling, bruising and numbness after a breast lift. These side effects should completely dissipate after four to six weeks, and any discomfort can be managed with medication. A small number of breast lift patients experience areas of permanent numbness, however this is a very rare event. Dr. James Gaffield will explain all aspects of breast lift surgery, including risks, benefits, and details of recovery, at your initial consultation.

Breast Lift with Implants

For women who would like to also counteract volume loss as well as skin reduction, breast implants can be inserted in tandem with a breast lift to enlarge the breasts while lifting them to a higher position at the same time.

Questions & Answers
What is the expected recovery time after breast lifting surgery?
The healing process will generally take 8 weeks before you can consider yourself completely healed, this will greatly depend on pre operative anatomy and general health of individuals. It can also depend on when a patient chooses to return to work, we recommend 3 weeks off desk type activities and 4-6 weeks off work for more laborious type workloads. Most patients will be skin healed at 3 weeks and require scar nurture for an additional 6 weeks beyond this.
I wasn't expecting to require a lift, how will my scars heal?
Your scars will heal and improve with time. from the day of surgery and for eight weeks into your recovery, we will use tapes to support and care for your incisions/scars. Beyond this time we will either choose to move to a scar treatment oil/cream or may choose to continue the taping to ensure the best possible outcome.
When can I wear a bra?
Bra wearing will recommence when healing and settling of the tissues has completed, a structured bra can increase pain, depressing scars and delaying incision union.
Can I still breast feed after a breast lift?
Absolutely, there is no anatomical reason why this is not possible after surgery. The procedure will rejuvenate the look of the breasts by removing excessive loose and non elastic skin and repositioning the nipple whilst keeping all the breast ducts intact.
