Breast Reduction

The discomfort and self-consciousness that often result from having overly large breasts can be improved with breast reduction. Contact Dr. James Gaffield today to schedule a consultation to discuss breast reduction.

Breast Reduction

For many women, having breasts that are disproportionately large can have a damaging effect on their lifestyles. While some women may simply feel somewhat self-conscious about their overly large breasts, many others experience physical challenges, including:

  • Excessive sagging or drooping of the breasts
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Skin indentations caused by bra straps
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Skeletal deformities
  • Problems with wearing certain types of clothing

Reduction mammoplasty – commonly referred to as breast reduction surgery – removes skin, fat, and excess glandular tissue from the breasts in order to make the bustline smaller and better proportioned with the rest of the body. This procedure has helped many women eliminate the common problems associated with having overly large breasts, in addition to giving them a renewed sense of self-confidence and the ability to wear what they want and feel great!

Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction is performed at our Bundaberg facilities, via the Friendly Society Private Hospital. The procedure is performed as an inpatient, under general anesthesia. Dr. James Gaffield will make an incision starting around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple) down to the crease of the breast, followed by a horizontal incision in this area. Excess skin, fat, and tissue will then be removed from the breasts. The nipples will be repositioned to a higher location to ensure the most natural appearance possible. Breast reduction generally takes about three to four hours to complete.

Patients should be aware that permanent loss of nipple sensation is a risk of breast reduction surgery. Dr. James Gaffield will discuss all the risks and possibilities of complication involved with the procedure during your initial consultation.

Breast Reduction Recovery

You can expect to experience some swelling and possible numbness in the breast and nipple areas for several weeks after surgery; however, this is typically temporary. Any residual pain and discomfort can be managed with medication. Strenuous exercise and lifting of heavy objects should be avoided for at least four weeks after breast reduction. Normal routines can generally be resumed after about two to four weeks.

Gynecomastia Treatment (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia is a condition that afflicts thousands of men, causing an excess of fat, skin, and glandular tissue to accumulate in the chest, creating the appearance of enlarged breasts. This often results in extreme self-consciousness that can lead to depression and other problems. Male breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure performed on men to reduce breast size and rebuild self-esteem.
