Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction – Gynaecomastia Treatment in Queensland

Gynaecomastia is a medical condition that is the result of excess breast tissue development. It can affect one or both sides of the chest and can occur in either the male teen or adult years. This condition is frequently caused by an imbalance in the hormones, oestrogen and testosterone, genetic disposition or particular medication use. Generally, gynaecomastia isn’t a serious problem, but it can cause discomfort, swelling and self-consciousness. It can go away by itself but it generally requires surgical intervention to correct. Our state of the art facilities located in Bundaberg Queensland are convenient to the South East, Wide Bay and Capricorn regions and are perfectly equipped to make your experience as seamless as possible. Dr. James Gaffield, of Pacific Plastic Surgery can significantly improve the size and contour of the male chest due to these developmental changes and/or from weight loss eventuating in excessive skin redundancy.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Although some cases of gynaecomastia, mainly those caused by obesity, can be treated with dieting, male breast reduction surgery is often the most effective treatment. The procedure will vary between patients depending on whether the breasts are composed of mostly glandular or fatty tissue. In many cases, Dr. James Gaffield will make small discrete incisions, usually in the demarcation margin of the lower periphery of the areola, and surgically remove the fibrous breast tissue. In cases where there is excess skin in addition to the glandular tissue present, the scars will be longer to ensure an aesthetically pleasing chest contour. Liposuction may also be used to benefit the overall result. Male breast reduction procedures typically are two to three hours of duration and are performed under general anaesthesia as an inpatient.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Patients can expect some discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the treated areas for several days following surgery; however this can be managed with medication. In a small number of cases, there may be permanent numbness in the chest area; however, this is rare. Dr. Gaffield will explain all the risks and benefits of male breast reduction at your initial consultation. Patients typically resume normal daily routines about two to four weeks after surgery. Employment commitments may need modification upon return to enhance your recovery. Strenuous exercise and activities, particularly weight training and impact focussed activity maybe delayed for up to eight weeks.
